Up all night to get Muddy
The purpose of this blog is categorically not to #humblebrag but on the same ticket, some memories are too good to forget and frankly a public facebook post might be a little too indulgent. Accordingly if you have found yourself reading this, sorry, you’ve found yourself in a dark spot because i’m about to ramble on about something that I’ve done. If you’ve braced yourself feel free to read on.
Several years ago whilst working at Warner Music Group I ended up locally (for the UK) product managing a box set which oddly had been orchestrated by Warner Music France. I use the term oddly, because normally boxed sets are curated by America, because they tend to be ‘global’ artists. A boxed set coming from France would imply a French artist. Alas, it wasn’t, but it was a French song that acted as the catalyst for the project… the delightful Spacer, by Sheila.
So the box set?
Well that was Chic.
The artist in question?
Nile Rodgers of course.
The Chic Organization Boxset Vol 1 : Savoir Faire.
When you begin to realise the influence that Nile and the Chic Organisation have had on music IN GENERAL, well, it’s very difficult not to be in awe. When you delve into it and you realise the sheer volume of hits that that man has contributed to… crikey. They really broke the mold.
Fun fact though: over the years, Nile may not have scored mega bucks from his original recording contract but attribute a few dollars here and there from the odd HALO game that he wrote the music for and you might just find a small pile amassing…
To the braggy bit then…
At Glastonbury 2013 Nile’s TV plugger Nikki got sick. I secretly think she just didn’t want to make the trek to the mudfest (the mudfest that wasn’t, that year) and fair enough. I was on site, I was working on the project, and so step up to the challenge I did. Escort Nile whilst on site at Glastonbury, he’s playing West Holts stage and there’s promo to be done.
Far be it from me to turn down a challenge – let alone a challenge that might just put me in the coolest situation i’ve ever been in in my life, to the plate I did step.
What a wonderful, sweet, humble human being Nile is.
A man who’s written songs you know, who’s made music on games you’ve probably played and a man who’s overcome cancer.
A man who got screwed by the business, but being the star that he is, shone through the bullshit and came out every bit the living legend that you imagine he is.
Glastonbury is often a weekend you forget. This is one I most certainly won’t.
Here’s a few pictures because why not. Keep rocking Nile.
